METHOD: to qualify and quantify O.E. and aftermarket 1VD-FTV oil pumps.
A Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series with a 1VD-FTV engine that had travelled 130,000 kms was used
for testing. The vehicle was serviced by the local Toyota Dealership and the oil changed with
5W30 grade oil. The vehicle was run on the chassis dyno until the engine oil was at 70°C. An oil
pressure gauge was fitted to the engine and an engine scanner to the OBDC-2 port. Starting at
500 RPM and increasing in 250 RPM increments, the engine’s RPM and corresponding oil
pressure were recorded.
A new O.E. oil pump and regulator body were installed on the Diesel Performance Engines Oil
Pump Test Rig and the test oil heated to 70°C. The pump was run at the same test point data pairs
as recorded in the vehicle with the oil pressure set by adjusting the oil pump flow restriction on the
test rig. These flow rates were recorded for each RPM point to simulate the flow resistance
experienced when the pump is running in an engine.
An aftermarket oil pump was then fitted to the oil pump test rig and at each RPM point the oil
pump flow was set to be the same as determined in the previous testing steps. At each setting
data pair, the oil pressure was recorded. This gave data to accurately compare the performance of
the new O.E. oil pump and the new aftermarket oil pump.

FINDINGS
Tests conducted on the Diesel Performance Engines Oil Pump Test Rig found that the aftermarket 1VD-FTV oil pump performed almost identically to the O.E. oil pump tested for comparison. The test conditions were based on an O.E. oil pump running in an O.E. engine with 130,000 kms operation after an engine service and new 5W30 engine oil. Based on these findings the aftermarket pump is suitable for sale.
The oil pressure relief valve starts to make a significant difference at about 2250 RPM.
